 G C G
You know all the rules by now, and the fire from the ice.

Their walls are built of cannonballs, their motto is "Don't tread on me".

 G C G
Like the morning sun you come, and like the wind you go.
Am Em C D

I've got me a violin and I beg you, call a tune.
Am Em C D
Anybody's choice, I can hear your voice.
 C D G D C G D G

Come hear Uncle John's band playing to the tide
 C G D C D
Come on along or go alone, he's come to take his children home.

Email Sent Nov 25th, 2020:

One time,

I went to a record store in a hipster area of Orange County where rich suburban kids like to buy vinyls because apparently “that’s how music is supposed to sound.”

I’m not disagreeing, and I can see how the ritual of changing records and dropping the needle feels better than just pressing play on an expensive rectangle…

But it all sounds the same to me…

Hell, for months now I’ve been listening to and recording music with cheap earbuds — and only the right side works.

Sure, I may be cheap, but I’m mostly lazy…

And quite frankly, I don’t really care.

Anyway,

I discovered a bargain bin (because I’m cheap) out front with a bunch of used cd’s that were $1 each.

While most of them were complete crap, I managed to prospect a few gems:

  • Limp Bizkit’s Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water for nostalgic reasons.
  • Eminem’s The Eminem Show because I lost my last one and it’s quite possibly one of my favorite albums of all time.
  • And The Grateful Dead’s Greatest Hits because the cover looked cool and the The Grateful Dead is one of those famous bands that I always heard about but never took the chance to really listen.

I loved it, and while I’m not a “Dead Head”, I really dig some of their songs — especially the one I’m about to show you.

Here’s your priority access, first look at my new cover of Uncle John’s Band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I3820HR-IQ

I really love this song, it’s beautiful, but I don’t know a lot of people who know it.

If you’d like, check out the original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSIajKGHZRk

I also learned from the movie The Music Never Stopped, (great movie btw) that this song got some flak from mainstream radio because of the overtly controversial lyric, “goddamn”.

Ooh ooh, the movie was also based on a true story from a really good book titled An Anthropologist on Mars by Oliver Sacks. Great Read.

Alright, I’ll quit nerding out on you guys…

Feel free to leave a like or comment.

Thanks,

The Grateful Dylan

Let me tell you 'bout a girl I know
Had a drink about an hour ago
Am
Sitting in a corner by herself
B C B
In a bar in downtown hell
Em
She heard a noise and she looked to the door

Light skin, light blue eyes
B C B
A double chin and a plastic smile
Em
Her heart raced as he walked through the door
And took an empty seat next to her at the bar
B
'My brand new car is parked right outside
Am
How'd you like to go for a ride?' And she said
Em
'Wait a minute, I have to think'
He said 'That's fine, may I please buy you a drink?'
B
One drink turned into 3 or 4
         C B Em
And they left and got into his car
         C B Em
And they drove away some place real far
Em
Now babe, the time has come
How'd you like to have a little fun? And she said
B C G
'If we could only please be on our way,
            D B
I would not run'
Em
That's when things got out of control
Em C B
She didn't want to
Em C B
He had his way
Em C B
She said let's go
Em C B

Come on babe, it's your lucky day

Shut your mouth, we're gonna do it my way
B C B
Come on baby, don't be afraid
B
If it wasn't for date rape, I'd never get laid

One night in jail, it was getting late
He was butt-raped by a large inmate

Sorry, I sent the first email prematurely…
(I just learned that pressing “tab” then “enter” in an email doesn’t indent and make a list, it sends the email)
Ole,
Many of you already know that I don’t choose to play songs based on their popularity.
I strictly play songs that I love to listen to and can’t help but to learn and play.
If you’re a fan of Sublime, then you’ve probably heard this song before…
It’s a song that’s hard to find unless you’re specifically looking for it…
That’s because google and youtube WILL NOT autocomplete your search (probably for good reasons).
In fact, I’ve had friends who REFUSED to listen to it because of its title, Date Rape.
But look, it’s not as bad as you think…
It’s about a girl who gets revenge on a guy who… you know. Then the guy went to jail and got… you know.
Ok, maybe it is kinda bad…
But the lyrics are sincerely well done, and the music is so good that you just get caught up in the vibe and you’ll want to listen twice: once to enjoy, and again to pay attention.
And it’s just a really good song.
Listen at your own risk…
Get your priority-access, first look with this link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC4wndhkbto
Enjoy or not, I still appreciate you guys.
2 more things:
1. I’m currently working on an updated version of The KL EP with harmonies and,2. A cover collaboration with my Russian friend, Viktor.
Things will start popping up soon.
Cheers,
Dylan

For the uninitiated,
I am a huge fan of Sublime, and I’m slowly trying to cover as many of their songs as possible. They have so many incredible songs that I’ll probably finish by the time I’m 64…
Which is insane when you realize that the lead singer, Bradley Nowell, died at age 28.
Now, I’m not gonna turn to heroin for inspiration (yet), but I would kill for an ounce of his talent, intuition, and musicianship.
Here’s your priority access, first-look at my new cover, Prophet by Sublime:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T11wElJXaQ

Actually, this isn’t a Sublime original — it’s originally done by Slightly Stoopid, another SoCal band that worked closely with Sublime.
Fun fact: Sublime mostly covered and sampled other artists’ music — a lot of these artists were small time punk, reggae, and ska bands that heavily influenced Bradley.
That’s why I find in art, you don’t have to be original, you just have to be good.
Unfortunately I’m neither…
Cheers,
Dylan
P.S. I got a nice little message from the artist I covered the other day:
“you murdered this bro🧡🧡🧡” – Keni Can Fly

It’s been a while,
In fact, it’s been exactly 52 days, nearly two months since my last email/video upload.
And if I had invested just $100 in Gamestop stock back then…
I would now have over $2,000 in the bank.
A 2000% return in under 2 months…not bad.
Plus, I have 2 more things to share with you:
First, get your sneaky peaky at my new upload which can be described as “a sweet song with dirty lyrics” — Check out “Mary” by Sublime here: https://youtu.be/46V6NIgWdUU
Second and more importantly,
I want to promote a good friend of mine and collaborator, Pontless Cake, aka Viktor the crazy Russian.
I met Viktor when I was in Vietnam and to be honest, I thought he was pretty fucking weird at first.
Turns out, I was right… he is weird, but he’s also a super cool and talented dude.
He asked me to sing the vocals to his cover of Childish Gambino’s “Redbone”.
While my vocals are… subpar to say the least.
His musicianship (he plays every instrument in the video), production, and video editing is pretty damn good.
So check out our cover and do not hesitate to share some likes, comments, and subscribe to his channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dh60R5PzNgg
And here’s to more collaborations in the future!
Cheers,
Childish Dyl-ino

Email Sent February 21st, 2021:

I was thinking the other day about my first day of backpacking for the first time in a brand new country…

That day alone was incredibly eventful from the moment we landed in Copenhagen, Denmark.

My friend Rocky and I spent our first 2 hours in the airport charging our phones, using airport wifi to basically google what to do next…

I applaud the information desk person at the airport for being so helpful, our conversation went like this:

Me: Uhh Hi, Do you speak English?

Them: Yes.

Me: Cool, do… do you know where we can find a hostel?

Them: Yes, here’s a list of hostels with their addresses and phone numbers.

Me: Thank you… Um, how can I get to these places?

Them: There’s a train that takes you to the Central Station near the City Center.

Me: Awesome… H-How do I take the train?

Them: Follow that sign and it will take you to the train.

Me: Great, um can I get my ticket there or?

Them: Yes, there’s an electronic ticket machine where you can print your ticket and pay.

Me: Nice, nice. So, where do I get the local money?

Them: Follow that sign to the ATM’s and Currency Exchange.

Me: Thank you so much.

Them: Enjoy your trip!

Me: Yeah, you too!

Only later to find out that September is a particularly busy time of the year for travelling in Copenhagen, and nearly all the hostels were booked solid.

We walked around aimlessly in the cobblestone streets — looking at colorful brick buildings, seeing what’s around the corner, and checking every hostel in the area until we finally found 2 open beds.

And to cap off our very first night abroad…

I ended up paying for a bed that was actually booked by another person, so I spent the night (and $30) on the floor — where I belong.

Speaking of ripoffs…

Sorry for making you wait so long for my videos.

So to make up for it, I recorded a bunch of covers, started some new originals, and spruced up some of my old originals from The KL EP.

So brace yourselves…

To start off, here’s your priority-access, first look at my new cover of “Only in Dreams” by Weezer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hroUVLhnwF8

This is one of my all-time favorite songs to listen to.

It’s a fan favorite, but I don’t think it gets as much love as it deserves.

That’s all for now, stay tuned for the next episode!

Dylan

P.S. As you can see, I finally got my “official” email to work again!

What do you picture when you hear the word, “Success”?

I bet you think of fast cars, big bucks, and hot women diving head first into a Scrooge McDuckean vault of gold coins.

But not me. Nuh-uh. No way Jose!

If you haven’t already read it on the front page of the Times (Or the Atlantic, or the Journal)

I’ve recently hit passed the 300 subscriber mark on Youtube.

With a calculated 39,930 total views and counting…

And a total of 9 videos with over 1,000 views and my top vid currently at 3,801 views.

Good things come in 3’s…

As you can see, I’m a pretty big deal over at Youtube HQ

Kanye’s gonna be knock knockin’ at my door BEGGING for a feature.

#blessed #humblebrag #yolo

But in all seriousness…

It is pretty cool I guess. It’s a start. It’s basically nothing in the grand scheme of youtube, but it’s something.

So thank you guys for your support. For real.

Now,

Remember how I said I made a bunch of videos?

I wasn’t lying…

And hey, it’s Black History Month!

And my next two videos happen to be by black artists.

Including one of my all-time favorites, Chance the Rapper!

Here’s your priority-access, first look, at my new cover of “Summer Friends” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps4phmJIDdY

Feel free to leave a like, comment, smash, tweet, tiktak, or whatever it is you kids do these days.

Til next time,

Dylan the Napper

P.S. Just a reminder that my good friend Viktor aka Pontless Cake and I made a cover of Childish Gambino’s Redbone and you should show him some love over at his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dh60R5PzNgg

Email Sent February 23rd, 2021:

Recently, I was talking with a friend about how much I hate reviews.

Can’t stand them really.

Yes, they serve a point, and they can be helpful.

But I find them to be mostly a waste of time and energy.

True, one good review can potentially save millions of people time, money, and frustration.

But for the most part, they’re just a form of “mental masturbation”…

Something that make you feel like you’re doing something productive when you’re actually doing jack ship.

And the way I see it…

The bad experience is usually worth the story.

For example, I remember when the movie, “Watchmen” came out.

It was absolutely HATED.

People were walking out of theaters, according to my sister and brother-in-law.

I didn’t care to watch it in the first place, but I stumbled upon it on tv one time and decided to see why it was so bad.

I kept on watching, waiting to see how bad it would get.

But I loved it. I’ve seen it several times now. I even read the graphic novel it was based on.

Then again,

I’m a weird person with weird taste.

So I’m probably not the target audience.

Speaking of not being the target audience…

This next song was written 90 years ago.

It’s played in one of the most famous movies of all time…

And was ranked #2 in American Cinema’s top 100 songs…

Only surpassed by “Over the Rainbow”.

And it really is a great song.

Here’s your priority-access, first look at my new cover of Dooley Wilson’s “As Time Goes By” from the film, “Casablanca”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXF_YNSZMw0

Feel free to share the love,

Dooley Dylson

P.S. Just heard Daft Punk just split up. Sadface. Here’s their goodbye video, “Epilogue”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuDX6wNfjqc

Am
I didn't want to be the one to forget
G
I thought of everything I'd never regret
F
A little time with you is all that I get
Dm
That's all we need because it's all we can take

Am
One thing I never see the same when you're 'round
G
I don't believe in him, his lips on the ground.
F
I want to take you to that place in the Roche
Dm
But no one gives us any time anymore

Am
He asked me once if I'd look in on his dog
G
You made an offer for it, then you ran off
F
I got a picture of us kids in my head
Dm
And all I hear is the last thing that you said:

         G
I didn't want to anymore

[Chorus]

Cause it doesn't happen everyday
                             G
Kinda counted on you being a friend
                             Am
Can I give it up or give it away

                                 F
Now I thought about what I wanna say

Email Sent on February 25th, 2021:

I mentioned last email that Daft Punk just split up after more than 25 years of sweet, sweet music making.

Which is too bad, but hey, we still have their music to remember.

Da Funk. Harder Better Faster Stronger. Doin It Right. Etc…

Since middle school, Daft Punk has been one of my all-time favorite bands.

In fact, my friend Rudy and I used to listen to them every day for a summer…

We would play Daft Punk’s anime movie, “Interstella 5555” in the background while we did our workouts.

My friend Blake and I were obsessed with the “Daft Hands” video that went viral at the time.

“Something About Us” is still one of the only songs I can play on piano.

And I’ve listened to the entirety of the album “Random Access Memories” more times than I can count.

Pardon my reminiscing…

It’s a complete coincidence that I recorded a cover of theirs the other day…

So here’s your priority-access, first look at my cover of “Instant Crush”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41NtCL7MXcA

The original song features Julian Casablancas, the lead singer from The Strokes — another band that I love and do covers of.

Enjoy,

Daft Dylan

There’s an ever-growing list of songs that I want to play and cover…

But sometimes, certain songs don’t work out.

Usually because they’re too difficult to play, I can’t find good chords for them, or I just can’t make it sound good…

Here are few of the many songs that I would love to play, but can’t:

Jamiroquai – Virtual Insanity

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit

Jackson 5 – I Want You Back

Bobby Hebb – Sunny

Tyler, the Creator – Boredom

Anyway, I’ve brought you a song that I can play…

And it’s a song that I usually never play or listen to…

It just kind of “popped up” in my head while I was looking for songs.

And I think it turned out alright.

Here’s your priority-access, first look at y new cover of “Cough Syrup” by Young The Giant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=046bkkTAjlE

It was a pretty big radio hit over 10 years ago, but I haven’t heard much else from them since.

Feel free to leave a like/comment/blackmail/etc.

Enjoy,

Dylan the Giant

P.S. I’m re-doing the KL EP with added harmonies. Stay tuned!

What is it that makes a song great?

Lyrics?

Melody?

Quite frankly, I don’t know.

In order to help answer this question, I’ll paraphrase the late Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart (when asked to decide what constitutes pornography):

“I can’t define what it is, but I know it when I see it.”

Or… “hear it.”

It’s funny how “today’s” music always sucks, and music from the past is sooo much better.

Don’t get me wrong, plenty of today’s music is ship…

And there’s plenty of good music from the past.

But that’s how it always is.

We forget the crap songs and remember the good.

Even then, the mainstream music market can only handle and market so many songs at a time…

So great songs from smaller labels and independent artists tend to slip through the cracks.

And I guess that’s where youtube and soundcloud help close the gap.

Because I somehow find these songs, mostly thanks to youtubes algorithm, and they’re incredible.

But unless you’re a person like me who spends way too much time on youtube listening to music…

You’ll probably never hear these songs.

But trust me, they’re really good.

Like today’s song, “Looks” by Steve Lacy.

This short little song is the first track of his demo album.

What’s most interesting about this album is that he recorded his bass, guitar, and singing through his iphone.

And here’s your priority-access, first look, before the rest of the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsSq-PobBMk

Please feel free to like, comment, and throw virtual tomatoes.

Cheers,

Dylan
